I am an experienced general dental practitioner in private dental practice in the UK. I will happily answer questions related to general practice, and have interests in endodontics (root canal), dental implants, CEREC and cosmetic dentistry.

Experience

I have been a general practitioner for over 20 years, working initially under the NHS, but for the past 7 years have been solely in private practice. I run a busy practice with my wife, Lisa, who is also a dentist. I have also been closely involved in the training of young dentists, and have lectured to dentists on a variety of subjects, both clinical and managerial, related to general dental practice.

Subject: irrigation cleaning

Question
I'm 37 years old and my dentist suggested having irrigation cleaning along with my normal cleaning. There is an extra charge for this. I was told my teeth and gums look great. Is this really necessary? Is it mainly used as a preventative measure?

Answer
Hi Sandy

I don't know whether or not you need this without seeing you. You really have to decide yourself whether you will actually get any benefit from this extra procedure - and whether the benefit you will get outweighs the extra cost.
