Question Dear Dr. Kaufman,
On June 19, my end molar had a root canal. After the root canal, it was discovered the tooth is fractured. Now the dentist suggest to have the tooth extracted. He doesn't think the crown would help much. The tooth next to it has a crown and the tooth diagonally below also has a crown & root canal. I was wandering if an implant should be placed there because of this and to prevent the bottom tooth from moving upward?
Also, why would the tooth still be sensitive.,sore after the root canal?
Thank you,
G. Seto
Answer Dear Grace:
You should definitely consider getting an implant to replace a missing tooth, if there is an opposing one. The teeth will start drifting to close a space.
However, prior to getting your tooth extracted, I would recommend going to both an Endodontist (specialist in root canal treatment) and a Prosthodontist (the specialist in restorative, cosmetic, and implant dentistry) for a second opinion. It is well worth the time and expense, since getting an implant in that area could present problems.
It is not uncommon for teeth to be sensitive after root canal therapy, but the pain should be going away. If it does not, the treatment should be re-evaluated. This is also a question to ask the Endodontist who is in much better position to answer then me on this limited forum.
Best wishes,
Dr. Zev Kaufman
