Question I have had periodontal problems all of my adult life and therefore have had deep root cleanings 3 - 4 times per year. Over the last few years my dentist has told me and I have seen in xrays the deterioration of the bone and as a result I recently have lost 2 teeth. He is suggesting that I have my teeth removed and have dentures, that with bone loss, bridges or permenent implants would not work. I am an absolute mental mess. The thought of dentures makes me ill. I have heard recently that there is a chance for bone regrowth - is this true or do I have any other alternatives? Thank you
Answer Hi Lynn,
Studies have shown that people who have lost teeth due to periodontal disease, can have implants and they can do very well with them. I would suggest that you go see an implant specialist, such as a periodontist or oral surgeon, who is familiar with current techniques and procedures to successfully place implants for you. Please don't despair, I'm sure that there is someone near you who can help you.
Sincerely,
Joseph Zelig
