Question My grandson was evaluated by 2 dentists. One said will put him on a papoose, pull 6 teeth and have more dental work later. Another says will give him General Anesthesia, pull 4, cap 8 and be done with everything. He is 3 ys. old with alot of health problems, GERD, ASTHMA, and mom still gives him a bottle with only water at night. What do you suggest? Concerened Grannie
Answer Dear granny,
Although I concede that in some situations the use of patient restraints such as a papoose board is unavoidable, I believe that it is somewhat barbaric, and has the potential to create deep and persistent psychological scars.
If your grandson cannot be relied upon to cooperate with his proposed treatment (not an uncommon situation at 3 years of age), the use of sedation is a more humane approach. The staging of the treatment is another thing altogether and is discretionary, although the management of established dental disease is best done in a timely fashion. However, the fundamental means of behavioral management is the key consideration here, and sedation is preferable to restraints unless your grandson's medical profile precludes it.
Hope this helps...
