Dentistry - Extraction on Upper Back Right Molar/Implant?
Expert: Rafael Mosery,D.D.S. - 10/28/2009
Question Dear Dr. Mosary: I wrote you before when I had a lower molar implant done (#19) and you were most helpful. Just recently, I lost a crown on my upper right back molar, the last one, not a wisdom tooth. It had been root canalled and dentist said the crown would no longer hold and recommended extraction, though there seems to be enough tooth structure left. At any rate, he told me that the tooth was not crucial to my bite, and that doing an implant in that region is trickier because it is close to the sinus cavity. I could see this on X-Ray. I have all my other teeth, including that implant, which is doing well, and wonder if it is a difficult task in that region, more expensive because of additional surgery, painful. etc, or should I just leave it alone? It hasn't been extracted yet as I was going to seek a second opinion to see if a crown might still work. I am blaming myself over this because I had a very stressful year and did not take as good care of myself - and my dental health - because of it. I think the crown could have held in there - but am now wondering about the implant? Thank you very much, Matthew
Answer If you have the full complement of teeth you describe it would be nice to replace the tooth with an implant. When the tooth is extracted don't wait too long to replace it..2 months is ok.Only further evaluation can tell if you need a sinus procedure or not.
