Dentistry - possible dentist malpractice?

Expert: Rafael Mosery,D.D.S. - 10/27/2009

Question
I recently changed my dentist because my original dentist retired.

When i was having my teeth cleaned at my new dentist's, my new dentist told me i need to re-do my old fillings.
so i followed her instruction and got them done.
i changed fillings on 19 on the lower left side and one molar at the end of the same side.
i went home and waited for my numbness to be gone.
when it was gone, i try to chew food on left side, i couldn't.
everytime i touched my lower left 19, it gave me a sharp pain.
it didn't hurt as long as i didn't touch it.
i went back, and they re-adjusted. but it still hurt.
i went back total of 5 times to fix it.
on my 5th visit, they sent me to orthodontist and they told me i might have cracked my tooth.
and now they want me to pay $1000 to get root canal and crown.

i really do not think i cracked the teeth. i can't help but believe they made a mistake while changing my fillings.
it's because it did not hurt when i had old fillings, but it hurt as soon as the numbness was gone.

i got an appointment to talk with the dentist about this problem, but i am worried they will not take any actions, but make me take care of it.
what should i do?

Answer
When the filling was redone it was deeper than before due to whatever defects in the original restoration. After excavating, the new restoration is now closer to the pulp. There are two types of inflammation associated with this, reversible(which will go away) and irreversible (which requires root canal). From what you describe ,you require a root canal to make this right and it's not the responsibility of the treating dentist.
