Expert: Zev Kaufman, D.D.S. - 10/30/2009
Question I had a root canal done on 2 lower back teeth about 2 years ago, the dentist pulled the tooth in front of these and they recently got infected, I could push the gum and pus would come out in front of the first tooth. Went to different dentis and he said the root canals were no good, sent me to endodontist to have redone, in this time I have been on clindamycin 2 round of it, had root canals redone, was in alot of pain after, this has been 2 weeks ago and I went yesterday to have teeth crowned and I still have infection, so no crowns, and another round of antibiotics, which are now affecting my stomach, cramps and diarrhea...since these are the only 2 back teeth left on this side, I had wanted to save them to attach a partial on,( I have 2 missing teeth on the other side), my question, I do not want to continue this antibiotic...could I just have these teeth pulled since I plan on getting the partial anyway? I dont know what to do...I am not in pain, other than what I think is from the long term use of the antibiotic.
Answer Dear Ginger:
I am sorry to hear about your pain. It appears to me that you, and your dentists have been concentrating on local problems, and not looking at the big picture. It is kind of like trying to repair the air-conditioning in your car while, in actuality, your brakes are shot, the engine is burning oil, and the tires are flat.
You need to speak to a dentist who will look at the "big picture", and can advise you on what teeth are worth while investing in, and which ones can just be removed and incorporated into your replacement prosthetic (removable denture).
Since you do not know the extent and training of any general dentist...(the best one, and the worst one, are both called--Doctor.) I recommend going to the specialist in the field of dentistry--the Prosthodontist.
www.prosthodontics.org will have a link to locating a Prosthodontist --the specialist in restorative, cosmetic, and implant dentistry, near you.
I am sure that there will be a charge for the consultation, but it is better to pay a little to stop paying a lot, un-necessarily.
If there is no private prosthodontist available, I recommend going to a local dental school, or hospital residency. They all have qualified people on staff that can help you.
If non of this exists, try and talk to your dentist about the cost factor, as well as treatment.
In any case, you should tell your dentist, and endodontist about your reaction to anti-biotics. You should not jeopardize general health.
Best of luck,
Dr. Zev Kaufman
