Dentistry - Broken tooth & Alzheimer's

Question
Dr. Kaufman,
I am daughter and caregiver for my mother who has late-stage alzheimer's disease. She is home-bound and hasn't been able to visit a dentist for a few years now. They don't do housecalls. She went to the dentist twice a year her entire life and has nice, and her own, teeth. The other day, a bottom front tooth broke off. Luckily I found it before it was swallowed. There is still part of the tooth left at gum level. Obviously, I cannot take her to the dentist for repair. Lately I've noticed a slightly bad odor coming from her mouth. She's never had bad breath before and I'm worried the tooth could be a problem. Would you please tell me what the dangers are in not having the tooth repaired. I would think it's easier for germs to get in there. She's in no pain, so other than good brushing of her teeth, what else can I do? Any and all details are appreciated!!

Dear Lisa:
Your task is monumental and admirable. Unfortunately, aside of careful, good brushing of your mother's teeth, there is not much that you can do yourself. Keep brushing the tooth, and her teeth in general. The cleaner it is, the less the chance of infection.
Aside of that, I am sorry to tell you that you actually need a dentist to look at your mother. Is there anyone with social services that can recommend a local dentist who would do a house call?
I wish you and your mother well, and again, I am sorry that there is no thing else that I can recommend for you to do.
