Dentistry - Residual Root Canal Problem
Expert: Gary Backlund, DMD, MSD - 11/8/2009
Question Gary:
I need some advice on this problem.
I continue to have problems with a tooth on which I had a root canal done about 2 years ago. I complain to my dentist regarding the daily aching from that tooth, and he continually indicates that "it looks good". I then went to as local endodontist and after looking at an Xray, indicated that "it looks good". He did not inquire about other problems or any other history. So, the problem remains and I need advice as to whom to see and how to determine the cause of the problem. My immediate thought is to see someone with MD and DMD credentials. Or another endodontist or perhaps discuss it with the director of the dental school in my state. Can you provide some insight or direction. Hope you can help and thank you for volunteering.

Answer Hi Nick,
I'm sorry all this is going on. I think your best bet would be to get another opinion from another endodontist or trying to get an evaluation at your closest dental school, but only if that school has a graduate endodontics program. Going in to a general dental school may not be any better than seeing a general dentist and can be VERY time consuming and a big hassle.
Seeing an MD is probably not a good idea unless you think it may not be tooth related. MD's know nothing about teeth actually. A DMD is just a different type of dental degree, I know because that's my degree, and doesn't really qualify any better than a DDS. Even a combined degree with both a DMD %26 MD really doesn't make that person better trained to diagnosis your problem. You need someone with advanced training in root canal problems, and that is an endodontist.
Hope this helps. Good luck!
