Dentistry - retainer and root canal

Expert: Gary Backlund, DMD, MSD - 11/5/2009

Question
I had #9 root canaled about 6 months ago. I have not been very good about wearing my retainer and it is a bit tight. Could this cause my tooth to crack since it is less strong now? I was unsure who to ask this question. Thank you in advance!

Answer
Hi Lil,

Actually, it is HIGHLY unlikely that your retainer would cause the tooth to crack. Even though you're right about it being weaker, it is certainly stronger than the pressure from a retainer.

Hope this makes you feel better.
