Dentistry/Gray stains

Question
Dr. Liewehr,

After a root canal, if there is a gray stain on the tooth, does that indicate something is wrong? Are there any tooth diseases OR tooth issues associated with light gray stains or any stain for that matter? Thank you.

Answer
If it is something internal, perhaps the endodontist did not clean the chamber completely. Hopefully it hasn't had a final restoration placed, so it can be cleaned out. If it has been filled with composite already, you are stuck with it. If it is a back tooth, probably doesn't make any difference. You will most likely be getting a crown anyway. If it is external, it should clean off. If you need any more info, I would need a photo.
