Question
Hi Dr. Teig,

I have a history of gum disease and problems with my teeth. About eight months ago, my dentist said that one of my teeth is infected, the nerves are dead, and that I need either a root canal or an extraction. I know I should have done something and did not, but will take care of the tooth this week.

During a recent routine blood test, the doctor saw my white blood count was elevated at 30k and so were my lymphocytes (75%). I am undergoing more blood tests, but while I am waiting, I was wondering if an infected tooth can cause this spike in my blood? Thanks for your time.

Answer
Concerned -  An active infected tooth can elevate you white blood cell count or add to an already elevated count.  The 30K count is, however, a litte elevated for just a tooth infaction unles you were severely swollend and the infection had expanded to a point you were unable to function. So most likely another cause is the major one on the 30K.
