Dentistry/Tooth pain

Question
I have had a respiratory cold for about a month and have not been able to kick it.  I have two back teeth top and bottom that my dentist and I have been watching for 3 years for potentially bad roots (possible root canal).
I've been going along without any pain for quite awhile.  Then, today I have been experiencing sudden, sharp, excruciating pain that lasts for a couple of minutes then completely goes away.  The sudden pain has been coming and going all afternoon.  Could this be related to my cold and possibly needing an antibiotic?

Answer
i would not try to write this off to your cold. sometimes a sinus issue can cause some dull, throbbing. your pain sounds a lot more intense. so i would call your dentist and get in there right away for an exam. do not put this off. you  would hate to have it really get painful over a holiday. good luck,
