Dentistry/chipped tooth

Question
I have had a slight gap at the top of my two front teeth for as long as I can remember.  This morning I ate a piece of pineapple and it got stuck in the gap.  I took a toothpick and began to work the piece out- and several slivers of tooth came out as well.  I now have a gap from the top of my tooth about three quarters of the way down.  It is a very narrow gap, but it is very noticable the closer you get to it.  I have not been to a dentist since I was little because of insurance problems and financial problems.  Is there anything I can do without going to a dentist?

it sounds like (even though i would need to see it in person to give you a definite answer) you chipped some tooth away. the only way to fix this is to add some plastic back on to fill in the gap. the only way to know for sure is to get in to your dentist and have the area looked at. i wish i could give you another answer but there really are none. good luck,
