Question
I have just been told mMy four year old daughter has enamel fluorosis on two of her top teeth at the very back.  I cannot understand what could have caused this, she never has fizzy drinks or juice and only drinks water, she also does not have too many sweets.  Her teeth are brushed every day and I though well cared for.  SHe does grind her teeh at night, could this have had any bearing on this problem?  I wanted to know if this will have any affect on her adult teeth?  And what can I do to prevent any further problems now and in the future?

Answer
Hi Vickie

Fluorosis is caused by too much fluoride while the teeth are developing.  So, this may usually have come from drinking water or toothpaste.  It is nothing to do with sugar or fizzy drinks.

Although the teeth may appear mottled they are in no way more susceptible to problems.

I have been a general dental practitioner for over 25 years, working initially under the NHS, but since 2001 have been solely in private practice. I run a busy practice with my wife, Lisa, who is also a dentist. I have also been closely involved in the training of young dentists, and have lectured to dentists on a variety of subjects, both clinical and managerial, related to general dental practice.
