Question
Hi,

I have an overcrowded lower right jaw.

The teeth are a little out of line, and the retromolar pad rides a little over the back tooth.

I have had pain, mainly in the jaw under the retromolar pad area, and on the pad itself, for about 5 days now.

I have had this pain before, and the dentist explained my jaw was overcrowded.   HOwever, previously, the pain was on the pad itself. After a few days the pain stopped.  

This time it's throbbing in the jaw area as well. It's especially painful after eating something. Do you think this is something that I should get loked at urgently, or is it something that will resolve itself naturally?

Dear Dale:  It sounds like you have a wisdom tooth just under the area you describe, and you are suffering a "pericoronitis", or infection at the site of the wisdom tooth.  It may also be an abscess under your gum at the retromolar area.  In either case, this is infection, and needs to be seen by your dentist as soon aspossible, as these infections typically get worse over time.  dd

On March 1, 2010, at the age of 62, I began all over again by buying a dental practice near my home in the Fort Lauderdale area. As sole owner and Chief Dental Officer of the new Nob Hill Dental Center (nobhilldentalcenter.com), I can now carefully provide dental care to patients who care, all within a caring, joyful environment. Over my career lifetime, I have provided thousands of diagnoses, fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, periodontal treatments, TMJ therapies, partials, dentures and extractions, and dozens of implants for my patients. The only aspect of dentistry with which I have very little experience is orthodontics.
