Question
I had a filling done 8 days ago, i had'nt seen a dentist for 2 and a half years as i have always been terrified! i new when i was goin i would need a filling as i had a whole in my tooth for the majority of the 2 & a half years i had'nt seen a dentist. well when i went i had my filling like i said 8 days ago the anastetic wore off and i had a slight ache which i could cope with. Then within the next to days i was in agony with toothache, it was even wakeing me up at night. I contacted my dentist an she said my filling was proud so filed it down. Then pain did'nt ease, so i have been takeing nurofen & using Orajel to help with the pain (which helps slightly). Now i cannot bitedown on one side of my mouth (where i had the filling top left molar) . what could be the problem ? i dont think i can stand the pain any longer its driveing me mad =( . Would be nice if you could help thanks

Answer
Hi Danielle

It could be that the pulp in the middle of the tooth is starting to die.  this happens on occasion and may mean that the tooth needs some further treatment.  Certainly by now the pain should be settling so go back to the dentist.

Expertise

I am an experienced general dental practitioner in private dental practice. I have worked for the past 25 or so years in the UK, and own a busy practice in Stratford upon Avon, Stratford Dental. From early 2012 my wife and I moved to Canberra, Australia, where I have taken up the position of Lead Dentist in a large city-centre practice. I will happily answer questions related to general practice, and have interests in endodontics (root canal), dental implants, CEREC/E4D cad-cam dentistry and cosmetic dentistry.

Experience

I have been a general dental practitioner for over 25 years, working initially under the NHS, but since 2001 have been solely in private practice. I run a busy practice with my wife, Lisa, who is also a dentist. I have also been closely involved in the training of young dentists, and have lectured to dentists on a variety of subjects, both clinical and managerial, related to general dental practice.
