Dentistry/Pain after filling

Question
Hi,
I had not been to a dentist in over seven years but plucked up the courage and went a few weeks ago. As a result of this I received a silver filling in my upper back right tooth on Tuesday lunchtime. After the anaesthetic wore off i began to feel a throbbing in my mouth - but assumed this was normal. However the throbbing and dull ache have not went away and i have to take pain killers every 4 hours which only slightly dumbs the pain. The pain wakes me up every 3/4 hours for more pain killers. Is this normal. I am terrified about going back to the dentist with this? What do you think this may be and what are the likely treatments? Thank you so much for your help.

Answer
Hi Kelly

the pulp in the middle of the tooth is inflamed and giving these symptoms.  if it is not improving then you need to go back to the dentist.  It may be they remove the filling and place a sedative dressing to calm it down.

I am an experienced general dental practitioner in private dental practice. I have worked for the past 25 or so years in the UK, and own a busy practice in Stratford upon Avon, Stratford Dental. From early 2012 my wife and I moved to Canberra, Australia, where I have taken up the position of Lead Dentist in a large city-centre practice. I will happily answer questions related to general practice, and have interests in endodontics (root canal), dental implants, CEREC/E4D cad-cam dentistry and cosmetic dentistry.

I have been a general dental practitioner for over 25 years, working initially under the NHS, but since 2001 have been solely in private practice. I run a busy practice with my wife, Lisa, who is also a dentist. I have also been closely involved in the training of young dentists, and have lectured to dentists on a variety of subjects, both clinical and managerial, related to general dental practice.
