Question
Hi,I have ok teeth but I want to make them better...after lookin at my teeth my dentist said that the best thing wud be porcelain capping.Although thats ok now I m double minded as that means filing of my real teeth(I m thinkin about getting 6 of my upper front teeth done)
The dentish assures me that the porcelain cappin is for lifetime and i wont need to think about whitening my teeth.
Is it a good idea to file down my existing teeth...what side effects can happen with porcelain cappin n will it last a life time?I m 23 right now.
Thankyou so much for being so kind as to answer my query

Answer
Hi Kanza

Having your teeth crowned commits your teeth to crowns for life.  These crowns will need replacing and the average life of a crown is probably around 15 years.  Each time the tooth is prepared for a crown there is a risk to that tooth and an increased chance of future problems with the tooth.

You need to consider this carefully before having crowns done.

Expertise

I am an experienced general dental practitioner in private dental practice. I have worked for the past 25 or so years in the UK, and own a busy practice in Stratford upon Avon, Stratford Dental. From early 2012 my wife and I moved to Canberra, Australia, where I have taken up the position of Lead Dentist in a large city-centre practice. I will happily answer questions related to general practice, and have interests in endodontics (root canal), dental implants, CEREC/E4D cad-cam dentistry and cosmetic dentistry.

Experience

I have been a general dental practitioner for over 25 years, working initially under the NHS, but since 2001 have been solely in private practice. I run a busy practice with my wife, Lisa, who is also a dentist. I have also been closely involved in the training of young dentists, and have lectured to dentists on a variety of subjects, both clinical and managerial, related to general dental practice.
