Dentistry/Post-Operative Tooth extraction pain

Question
Five days ago I had three of my wisdom teeth removed (the fourth having been removed a few months prior).  The bottom two were impacted and the top was just a normal extraction.  I didn't experience hardly any pain at all for the first few days and on the fourth day I started experiences intense pain.  It hasn't gotten worse, but the pain feels like it is in my lower jaw where the teeth used to be, and it hurts to eat on the molars that are in front of the extraction sites. The pain also resonates through my jaw, neck and ears.  The surgeon assured me the molars did not need to be removed but I was wondering what could be causing the pain in my teeth (it's just those two), and the radiating pain through my head.

Answer
Dear Jacqui:
The reason that you have pain that resonates throughout your jaw is that the nerves that innervate the area are connected to the same main nerve.  It is very common to have referred pain from one area to another.  The pain could be just post-operative pain, but it could also be due to an infection or a dry-socket, where the extraction sockets is not going through a normal healing process.

It is imperative that you return to your oral surgeon and make sure that everything is OK with your healing process.  It is not uncommon to get post extraction pain, but it is very important to rule out any infections, dry-sockets, etc.

Best of luck with your healing,
Dr. Zev Kaufman
