Dentistry - Conservative treatment of small cavities

Expert: Mark Bornfeld DDS - 3/25/2009

Question
Dear Dr Bornfeld,

I recall reading a research article several years ago that described a technique that chemically cleans small cavities in preparation for filling with composite or "sealing" without the need to drill, thereby maximally preserving the natural tooth. Is this available in dentistry today? What's it called? My dentist drills and fills the smallest enamel compromise - perhaps not the best approach.  Thank you.

Answer
Dear Jeffrey,

The system to which you refer is called "Caridex". To my knowledge, it is no longer in production, and is currently unavailable. It enjoyed a short period of media attention about 20 years ago, and disappeared. Although it was of some academic interest, its cumbersome and slow implementation did not allow it to catch on among clinicians.

Hope this helps...
