Question I had my 2 front top teeth with root canal treatment. When i had to have it capped, my dentist suggested me to have it also for the next tooth near it. So i had the cavities on that tooth removed and had the crown with metal lining inside it for all the 3 teeth. Now i have developed an abscess above the third tooth which also had crown without RCT. The X-ray suggested that tooth also has developed infection in the pulp. Now the complication is how to remove the Crown! I am so worried about it. Is there any possiblity to remove the pulp while i get the abscess removed through the gums?
Answer Dear Dan,
Although it is often possible to remove a fixed bridge using specialized tools for this purpose, it is almost never necessary to do so.
If root canal therapy is indicated, it can be performed right through the crowns, leaving the bridge in place. In fact, this is the preferred technique.
If for some reason this is not feasible, it is also possible (as you suggested) to treat the infection surgically-- through the gums-- using a procedure known as "apicoectomy". So you see you do have several options, and I'm sure at least one of them will be appropriate in your case.
Hope this helps...
