Dentistry - bad taste after wisdom teeth extraction

Expert: Mark Bornfeld DDS - 3/12/2009

Question
I had four impacted wisdom teeth removed on Mon (four days ago) and I'm experiencing a bad taste in my mouth.  I am following all instructions carefully and just today I began to rinse the extraction sites with a curved tip syringe.  Should I be concerned?  I am also still having a significant amount of pain.  I am still taking advil every 4-6 hours.  It helps, but I still have a horrible headache, and pain at the lower extraction sites. I am concerned because I am supposed to go back to work tomorrow, and in general, I feel lousy.  Thank you for and advice you can give, and for your time!!

Answer
Dear Delia,

It would be normal to experience some bad taste and smell from recent wisdom tooth extractions, and this by itself does not indicate that anything has gone wrong.

However, your dentist may be able to provide you with assistance with the management of your pain. You should consider calling him to see if he can provide you with more effective pain medication.

Good luck!
