Dentistry - dis comfort after having a bridge put on

Expert: Mark Bornfeld DDS - 3/11/2009

Question
I had a temporary bridge put on my lower left side ( 3 teeth )10 days ago and have been having some pain. I did go back to the dentist and she filed it down. She also took x-rays but nothing showed on those 3 teeth.I am still having discomfort after that , it has been 5 days.. although taking 2 advil seems to help fine.Is there a certain period I should wait before returning? is it possible the bridge is too tight? Should I ask the dentist to remove it and leave it off for 2 days and see if the pain continues.is that a viable option?

Answer
Dear Albert,

The flexibility of the typical temporary fixed bridge, as well as the softness of temporary cement, makes discomfort a common phenomenon in situations such as yours. This does not necessarily reflect on the success of treatment, unless the pain is very severe.

You should probably suspend judgment until the finished "permanent" bridge is placed. Due to the uncertainty here, it would be preferable to cement the finished bridge with temporary cement until it has proved itself in use.

Hope this helps...
