Dentistry/can't have epinephrine

Question
I am taking an MAO inhibitor and can only have the pure novocain, no ephnephrine. I need all of my top teeth pulled. I recently went to a dental school and they set up a treatment plan to have them pulled one at each visit. Will the pure novacain numb me enough to pull a tooth?

Answer
Dear Connie,

Technically speaking, the term "Novocaine" refers to an anesthetic that is not much used anymore. However, there are a wide variety of very effective local anesthetic agents that don't contain epinephrine or other vasoconstrictors that will provide adequate numbness for the procedures you are anticipating. I doubt you will have any difficulty with your upcoming dental treatment.

Good luck!
