Dentistry - Swollen Back Gum---where wisdom tooth should come up

Expert: Mark Bornfeld DDS - 4/13/2009

Question
HI
My left hand side of my mouth (at the back) is soo swollen it hurts to talk, close my mouth and eat. The wisdom tooth partly came up years ago. But all of a sudden the gum swells and is red and sore....tooth does not want to come up. Pain and swelling goes after a few days but comes back months later

Answer
Dear Stacey,

You have a case of what is known as "pericoronitis". This condition is common when there are partially impacted wisdom teeth, especially on the bottom jaw.

Although pericoronitis can be temporarily managed with antibiotics, it tends to recur. The only reliable way of keeping it from coming back is to extract the wisdom tooth.

Your dentist can provide guidance as to whether wisdom tooth extraction is appropriate in your case.

Hope this helps...
