Question If a sinus perforation is left un treated what will be the outcome?
Answer Dear Sarah,
The consequences of unrepaired sinus perforation can vary from case to case, depending on the individual circumstances. For example, in an immunologically competent individual where the perforation is small, it may heal spontaneously without any formal surgical repair. In other cases, a chronic communication between the sinus and the mouth remains, which at the very least creates an unhygienic condition, where saliva and food can be forced into the sinus, and sinus exudate can drip into the mouth. This can sometimes result in chronic sinusitis as well, accompanied by ongoing pain and perhaps systemic manifestations of infection.
Hope this helps...
