Dentistry - flouridex

Expert: Joel S. Teig, DMD, FABOMS - 7/2/2009

Question
Hi Dr. Teig,

I was wondering if you ever heard of a product called Flouridex? It was introduced to me by my dentist, and he said I should use it for my gums. I have swollen gums, but slightly, and my gums are causing my tooth pain. So, is this product any use for that, and what is it used for? is it really that great? I thin it is called Flourdex daily defense.

Answer
Jane -  Fluoridex is not primarily used for periodontal problems.  Its main purpose is to reduce sensitivity to stimuli from cold and sweets due to its high fluoride content.  The high fluoride actually makes the enamel (the outside surface of the tooth crown) denser.

If the problem is the gums, any toothpaste will work if you are taught the proper way to ensure gingival cleaning.  That does involve brushing, but also flossing will make it cleaner.

If you are having sensitivity to especially cold fluids, then the Fluoridex will help, but don't spend for this tooth paste if the problem is due to the swollen gums and pains due to the gums.  You should learn to brush properly, floss your teeth and to accentuate reducing gum inflammation, the use of Listerine mouthwash twice a day after brushing and flossing your teeth, will reduce the gum problems.

I really don't understand why the dentist would recommend this if the problem is due to your gums.  If the main problem is just tooth sensitivity to cold, the this toothpaste could help.
