Question My kid has a T-Rex Pendulum Appliance on the roof of his
mouth. We have followed his instructions for a while now but
last Sunday my good friend who is an orthodontist told us that
we were crazy to have that in our son’s mouth. He then walked
over to my son relined the lazy boy and did an exam right
there! He said that my son needs to have four teeth out and
have braces for a couple years. So the next day we took my kid
to his office and gave him the works; a full examination,
molds made of his teeth and a few x-rays. Our friend concluded
the same thing; 4 teeth out and braces. A week later we
counseled another orthodontist who agrees. My friend is a
trustworthy guy and has offered a family discount at his
office so I know he’s not just doing this to make a buck. Plus
I don’t like the current orthodontist, he’s a bit off. So what
do you think? Go with my friend or stay with old Dr.?
Answer Hi Robert,
Thanks for the question. Robert what you have to decide on is whom do do you have a better relationship with. The reason I say this is because there really is no right or wrong answer. Every orthodontist will have an opinion on what is the best way to provide treatment but this opinion is usually based on what works best in their hands. Whether or not an appliance is the right thing to use is very difficult to determine and is subjective. What matters is can the desired outcome be achieved with the current treatment in place AND how stable will the result be after treatment. This is very important point. Teeth and bone can be moved and modified greatly, however, if the teeth and bone are moved into positions beyond biological and physiological limitations then there will be relapse and all the time spent in treatment will be for nothing and have to be redone. SO the question is which treatment modality will provide the greatest stability. If there is advanced crowding then usually extraction of some teeth and condensing of the space will be very stable after treatment. Robert, again what this means is you have to decide which person you feel most comfortable in accepting treatment from and as long as all of your questions have been satisfactorily answered then your decision will be more apparent.
