Dentistry - gum infected after extraction

Expert: Howard Finnk, D.D.S. - 7/4/2009

Question
it is saturday morning, tuesday past i had an extraction down on a lower jaw tooth, wasnt the one right in the far back but next to it...i had a filling that had fallen out and on exray found out a hole had gone almost to the root, problem was couldnt redo filling..roots were twisted bad!  got a second opinion and he said same thing, would have to see a speicalist to try and maybe do a root canal but didnt think it would work as the tooth looked a little infected..so i had the extraction with just needles to freeze me jaw..well what a experience,,almost 1 1/2 hours getting it out..she had to break the tooth apart to get the top of it then drill the roots to separate them to remove them..i lost all the bone in front of the next tooth...was given no antibiotics for just in case...Thursday its starting to swell and ache and i can taste something unpleasant. called the dentist, she phoned out to the pharmacy amozicilin..250 mg..take 2 every eight hours...to watch it closely..i live two hours away from her so was at work and couldn't just up and go...so taking the antibiotics since then,,its Saturday my jaw looks maybe a tiny bit swollen..my breath is very bad..the hole looks yucky...i even started swishing with salt water on Wednesday..i touch a q-tip to the hole..and took it out it stank really bad and stuff on it...i don't know what to do..is there anything I can take or do to hopefully get the stuff out of the hole..I think that's what is causing the infection...if not I'll have to wait until Monday or Tuesday?..please help

Answer
Dear s:  It is infected.  I can't tall if the infection is getting worse or improving.  Continue taking the antibiotic.  Rinse with disinfectant mouthwash.  Do not put Qtip in hole.  Get Glyoxide.  Squirt a few drops in hole every few hours.  It will foam up and remove food particles.  It also disinfects.  If none of this works, contact your dentist Monday.  dd
