Question QUESTION: I just had a few porceline crowns done and they almost feel "ridgy" on the inside, almost like there are scratches on them. While they fit beautifully, I can almost see faint "ridges" that look like vertical scratches on the front if I look at them closely under a light. Is this normal for all porceline crowns? I am concerned more about it affecting the longevity and stain resistance of these crowns as to whether the scratchy look is normal and will it affect them long term? thanks.

i cannot really answer this without seeing things in person. i assume these are front teeth. sometimes the lab will put some grooves, etc into them to make them look more natural. you do not want a perfectly smooth, shiny surface. this is not natural. they will look fake. you want some characterization. but there is such as thing as too much. you need to sit down with your dentist and ask specifically about what you do not like. let him/her explain what is on there and then you can decide what to do from there. glazed porcelain does not stain so this should not be an issue. longevity should not be an issue either. sit down with a mirror and point all of this out and have your questions answered. good luck.

QUESTION: HI Dr. Jeff,
Thanks so much for answering my question. Yes they are front crowns and while you can't see the scratches unless you are looking for them, I felt them a bit on the underside of the crowns, the temps felt much smoother, that is why I was concerned. Thanks so much I am going to bring this up with my dentist.
Answer calling your dentist is the best idea. have him/her take a look and put your mind at ease. and if you do not feel comfortable with what you are told, you can always get a second opinion from a different dentist. but you should be 100% satisfied with the work you had done. good luck,
