Dentistry/Decay Under Crown

Question
I had a crown put on #30 in 2007. A recent x-ray showed decay on the lower part of the tooth. My dentist says he can fill the decay but the crown has to be removed and replaced. Is that true, that the crown has to be replaced? Can't it be reused?

Answer
Sorry to say but old crowns cannot be reused. First off you usually have to cut them off to get them off in order to remove decay and reshape it. Second the new preparation with decay removed will be totally different shape. I hope this helps you understand what will take place.
