Question
hi,i am a diabetic and g get frequent infections.i also take blood thinners.i am concerned when they scrape your tooth to remove tartar there is chance of infectionif gums bleed.a novicaine shot cause infections ,please advise

Answer
doing a cleaning should not cause an infection. on occasion, i will premedicate a patient with an antibiotic before a cleaning if they have a history of getting gum infections after cleanings. so my decisions are made only based on what happens with my patients. but diabetes does not mean this will take place or be needed. with the blood thinners, you need to be more gentle while cleaning the teeth...you will be more prone to bleeding with the cleaning. dental anestesia (novacaine as you call it) does not cause infections at all so no worries there. i hope this helps
