Question
I had a root canal on a tooth a few years ago, and the tooth has a crown.  The crown came out today, and part of the entire top part of the dead tooth was still attached.

I cannot afford to have any major work done.  I spent $1200 bucks on the tooth, and didn't really expect to have anything else happen to it.

Since the tooth is already dead, would it be safe to leave it and let my gums close in over it?

WOW....bad timing with the holidays and everything. Unfortunately, the problem is that the root canal will only continue to be effective if the cement inside the tooth continues to seal the root canal. This cement is soluble in saliva. With the tooth broken off, there is a high likelihood that the cement seal is already compromised. In cases such as this, it is usually advisable to retreat the root canal, build the tooth back up and put on a new crown....and as you know that is big $$$$$. By letting the gum bury the tooth, you are setting yourself problems down line. You would be much better off to just have the tooth extracted if you really feel there is no way you will be able to afford to have the tooth redone.
