Dentistry - Craze lines

Expert: Joel S. Teig, DMD, FABOMS - 3/11/2007

Question
last week i was eating an apple and i noticed bleeding on my gums ,,so next day i went to the dentist and he took x-rays and everything was ok. but  i noticed this lines on some of my front teeth and now I'm worried that they might cracked or something like that.. i know that theres nothing to for that that but how can i prevent them from future cracks ..?  can they put something around them to prevent that?

Answer
Anel - The major question is the cause of the cracks.  Most cracks are not caused by normal eating habits, but are from tendencies towards clenching and grinding of the teeth in non-eating times.  This is a muscular phenomenon that places undue stress on the teeth and causes the cracks.

Often this problem is due to a bite that is not equal on all of the teeth.  In response to that we grind our teeth at night or clench. Either of these can produce cracks.

The best thing to do is to have your dentist fabricate a nightguard for you to wear when sleeping.  The habits that produce the cracks can be eliminated or reduced with the nightguard.
