Question
Hi. I just want to know if its possible to just have a 2 unit bridge rather than a 3 unit.I was told that i needed a 3 unit FPD because I have a missing 2nd premolar. But is it possible that they work on just one tooth as an abutment? thanks.

Answer
Dear Leah,

It is certainly possible to support a prosthetic tooth (pontic) with only one abutment crown, but it is seldom advisable. These so-called "cantilever" bridges are supported only on one side, and the abutment tooth is severely torqued by the chewing forces incurred by the pontic. This could ultimately lead to the loss of the abutment tooth. Assuming that the second premolar that is being replaced is functioning against an opposing tooth, I would very much advise against your proposed strategy.

Hope this helps...
