Question
Dr. Scherr,

Many, many thanks for answering my last question(s). If I could ask one more: Could there possibly be a neuroma, cracked root, or residule nerve debris under # 3. Its had 2 RTC and a crown on it. Thanks for you patience with all these questions. Pete

Answer
Pete,

Yes, these are possible.  A neuroma is one possible cause of atypical odontalgia.  I am certain your endodontist has checked for residual nerve debris to the greatest degree possible.  If there is still debris present, it is likely that a sore in the bone that can be seen on xray will eventually form.  This would typically take months or years.  Cracks can be very difficult to find.  Unfortunately, some cracks can only be detected after the tooth is removed.  How many teeth are you willing to remove just to confirm that they were never cracked in the first place?

Good luck!

Steve

Experience

I was the Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Maryland Dental School in 1981. I served as a General Practice Resident at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore in 1981-82, and have been in private dental practice since that time. My practice is now located in Owings Mills, MD, a suburb of Baltimore. My studies at The L.D. Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education in Florida has enriched my practice and my patients. It was there that I learned the true meaning of excellence.
