Question
Dear Dr Appleton,
I have been to see my dentist complaining of pain on my lower back teeth but not sure for which tooth. When he examined the x-rays he couldnt find any obvious problem but thought that a very deep filling i had was causing the problem. He prescribed me antibiotics and I made an appointment for next week to have possible root canal. The thing is as soon as I started taking antibiotics I got the most horrible pains,I am taking maximum paracetemol and ibuprofen but after few hours this wears off and its like a hot poker stabbing sensation. Is this the antibiotics?if so why should it be CAUSING pain?can i take any other stronger pain killers?
any help will be appreciated
thank you
debra

Answer
Hi Debra

The antibiotics won't be causing the tooth pain.  This pain sounds to me like the nerve in the tooth is inflamed and dying, in which case the antibiotics probably won't do much good. You will find a painkiller containing codeine to be better - ask your pharmacist for advice, or go back and see your dentist sooner.

I am an experienced general dental practitioner in private dental practice. I have worked for the past 25 or so years in the UK, and own a busy practice in Stratford upon Avon, Stratford Dental. From early 2012 my wife and I moved to Canberra, Australia, where I have taken up the position of Lead Dentist in a large city-centre practice. I will happily answer questions related to general practice, and have interests in endodontics (root canal), dental implants, CEREC/E4D cad-cam dentistry and cosmetic dentistry.

I have been a general dental practitioner for over 25 years, working initially under the NHS, but since 2001 have been solely in private practice. I run a busy practice with my wife, Lisa, who is also a dentist. I have also been closely involved in the training of young dentists, and have lectured to dentists on a variety of subjects, both clinical and managerial, related to general dental practice.
