Question
For months I have noticed my gum line receding. Mostly for the lower front teeth. It's rather scary as I am afraid that very soon I will begin loosing my tooth. Please advise what could be the possible cause of the frightening problem. Thanks much

Answer
Dear Marcia,

There are numerous possible causes for gum recession, including but not limited to:

-inflammatory periodontal (gum) disease
-over-zealous toothbrushing
-orthodontic movement of the teeth too far forward, through the front surface of the supporting bone
-anatomical deficiency of connective tissue under the receded gum area

Because these causes are inherently different and require different types of therapeutic management approaches, your first step should be to consult with your dentist. Once the nature of the cause underlying your gum recession has been identified, it is usually a simple matter to devise a treatment strategy.

Hope this helps...
