Dentistry/Receeding Gum Lines

Question
Hello.  I am a 20 year old male with receeding gum lines.  I use an extra soft brush, but as of recently, more teeth have seemed to be receeding quickly.  It hurts to put pressure on these exposed areas.  I was told by my dentist to brush softly, which I have been doing, but then there is little white residue at the base of the receeding.  The white stuff is there when I don't brush much on the gum line.  I was always told to brush both gums and teeth, and now I am paying for it.  I have no cavities or other dental problems.  Unfortunately, I am at college 450 miles from home.  Any suggestions?  I appreciate any help.  Thank you

Answer
Dear Mike:  Odds are, in addition to scrubbing too hard with a harder-than-soft brush, plus scrubbing your gums, you clench your teeth, probably day and night.  If you are college-age, significant gum recession is happening way too early for ayou.  I barely have any, and I'm 60.  But, we're all different.  So here goes:  extra-soft brush (Crest SpinBrushPro extra soft) with Colgate Total toothpaste.  The brush is electric, so you must watch how long and how often you brush.  I rarely brush for more than 1 minute.  With the electric, all I have to do is be sure I'm aiming at the gumline of each tooth, and pass over all my teeth for 1 second per side (cheek, then tongue sides).  That's a total of 56 seconds per brushing session.  Plenty for you.  Do this NO MORE than twice per day.  Then have your dentist make you a biteguard, to protect your gums from your clenching habit.  Then measure, in millimeters, on the tooth with the worst recession, the distance from the neck of the tooth to the edge of the gum.  Do this again in one year, after wearing the guard and taking all my advice, and let me know if you've stopped the progress of the recession.  Good Luck.  dd
