Dentistry/Recent posting regarding Sonicare

Question
Dr. Finnnk, I came across your recent answer to a posting regarding Sonicare toothbrush (3/20/06).  I have the (mis?)perception that sonic type toothbrushes are the standard.  But I could be wrong since I'm no dentist.  Is there anything in the dental literature to support or refute one type of powered toothbrush vs another and does your recommendation of using a powered spin brush still stands.  BTW, I currently use Braun 3D Excel spin brush and was thinking of getting Oral B Sonic Complete.
Thanks, Dave

Answer
Dear Dave:  I am amazed at the number of people who believe that if they spend big bucks, they'll get their teeth more clean.  My preference still stands.  Either the Crest SpinBrushPro EXTRA SOFT or its Oral-B competitor (soft) are the best, as well as the least expensive (I just bought 2 of the Oral-B's for $3.99 each).  Your Oral-B (which cost you ?$) is just fine.  I would not change it until you need to replace the bristle head, then compare prices.  How much is a new one of the brushes I recommend, against the cost of replacement heads for yours.  I like the action of both my brushes, as they both spin and move horizontally, both actions being the best for removing food particles and plaque from around the gumlines of your teeth (most important for preventing or reducing gum disease).  I cannot site specifics in the dental literature, but Google toothbrushes.  Or go to WebMD and search toothbrushes.  Or the ADA website and search again.  dd

I am certified in placement of Mini Dental Implants, and I am Director of The Florida Implant Center (floridaimplantcenter.com). The only aspect of dentistry with which I have very little experience is orthodontics.
