Dentistry/Retainer

Question
Hello Dr.,
I have had my braces off for approximately 10-12 years now.  About 2 months ago, one half of my bonded reatiner (on the bottom front teeth) came off.  I have noticed no movment or shifting of teeth while the appliance has not been fully in place. Today, the bonded retainer fully cam out of place.  My question is...due to the timeframes and no teeth movement, am I ok to not have the applicance put back in place? I understand it may be advisable to return the appliance, but is there a great chance of movement if I do not? Thank You. Dave Knazur

Answer
Dear Dave,

Some movement of the lower incisors is certain-- what I cannot predict is the time frame, the amount of movement, and whether this would fall within your "comfort zone". An accurate prediction would require an assessment of your mouth, which is something this forum does not permit. Be advised that embarking on a course of active orthodontic therapy to reverse the effects of relapse will entail a substantially greater expenditure of time and money than simply replacing the fixed retainer. In this regard, you might consider the cost of a new retainer a reasonable insurance policy against the potential for losing the benefit of your prior therapy.

Hope this helps...
