Dentistry/Root Canal

Question
Hi Dr. Bornfeld,

I have been told by my dentist that I am in need of a root canal.  I have had several fillings in the past, and I wondered if "root canal" is one way to "beef up" business.  I was also told that a "leaking" filling is one cause for under going a root canal.  Why would a relatively new filling leak if it was "properly" done, or is it possible that when a filing is done that the dentist has the opportunity of cutting or damaging the nerve in order to get additional business, sort of like an "unsavory" auto mechanic.  I don't enjoy being the skeptic, but from what I believe, the possibility may exist in some dental arenas.
An honest response would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Answer
Dear Geri,

There are unscrupulous people in all walks of life, and unfortunately there are some dentists who fall into that category. However, root canal therapy is a legitimate and appropriate treatment for many clinical situations.

A full exposition on endodontic diagnosis is beyond the scope of this forum, and it is not possible to provide guidance to you in a meaningful way without access to the relevant diagnostic data. However, if you have reason to doubt the integrity of your dentist or would simply be more comfortable if your treatment plan was corroborated, I urge you to seek an independent second opinion, in person, with another dentist.

Hope this helps...
