Question
Hi

Recently my nerve in my front tooth died and the tooth color has changed.  My dentist want me to see an endodontist to have a non-surgical root canal to be done.  Could you explain this procedure and how much it costs approx as I do not have insurance.

Thanks in Advance
Jeff

Answer
Hi Jeff,

The easy part of your question is "what happens"? When you do a root canal, the dentist numbs the area, then drills a small hole in the back of the tooth. next the length of the root is measured, either electronically or with xrays, and then the tooth is cleaned and shaped to prepare it for a filling which is fitted and packed into the root. The procedure takes 1-3 appointments depending on technique and difficulty. It is painless and you may experience a little tenderness after the appointment, but usually aspirin, etc. will take care of that.

As to cost, it varies widely depending on the specialist and your area of the country. I would figure on $600-1000 for the complete treatment, but I really can't be sure, so don't quote me!

Most patients do VERY well and it should be a simple procedure. Best of luck to you!

Hope this helps...
