Dentistry/Root Canal Post

Question
When doing a root canal does an endodonist always use a post?   What circumstances would a post be used?   On an upper tooth, is the sinus an issue on whether to use a post or not?

Thank you for your time.

Answer
A post is placed when there is insufficient tooth structure to retain a core, which is the filling a dentist puts in the tooth to replace the part that is missing, over which he places the crown. Some dentists routinely place them in all teeth, but this is at best unnecessary and at worst, can actually reduce the likelihood of success, because they can lead to fracture of the tooth. Proximity to the sinus is not a concern because the post is entirely within the tooth.
