Dentistry/Root Canal Question

Question
Tomorrow I have an appointment for a root canal on an upper left molar.  Have had two consultations with family dentist and one w/RC specialist.  Percussion test and cold test conclusive that nerve is "dead".  No evidence of abscess.  Only had pain four weeks ago (time of exams) during a time of extreme stress for approx. five days then completely disappeared - not at all evident the past three weeks as life settled down..  Deep cavity filling caused nerve damage and subsequent "dying".  I am convinced nerve is dead - will pain come back?  Is doing nothing right now a good idea?  Not even moderately convinced that a root canal is necessary.  Thanks.  43 yr old healthy male.

Answer
If the clinical tests done show that the tooth is indeed nonvital, you're dealing with a timebomb. You could leave it be for now and then when least expected it could flare up.I prefer you treat it on your scheduled appointment that's more predictable and be done with it.If you choose to gamble ,you can, but WHY?
