Dentistry/Root canal

Question
Hi, I had a root canal done by my general dentist a few months back. after the root canal, I notice I could tap on the tooth and feel a slight sensation of pain, only when the tooth is being tapped. It doesn't linger. Also, sometimes when I run or I guess when my heart rate increases the tooth begins to throb, generally not painful but sometimes It can have tiny spikes of pain. Nothing that is un-bearable. After trying antibiotics and my dentist cleaning and messing with the root canal more, he wants me to see an endodontist because he feels there may be a calcium blockage? I was just curious as to what your thoughts are? thank you-

Answer
Hi Brian

This sounds completely reasonable to me - there is obviously an area within your tooth that your dentist has not managed to sort out, and so referral to a specialist is the best option.

I think your dentist is acting in your best interests.

Expertise

I am an experienced general dental practitioner in private dental practice. I have worked for the past 25 or so years in the UK, and own a busy practice in Stratford upon Avon, Stratford Dental. From early 2012 my wife and I moved to Canberra, Australia, where I have taken up the position of Lead Dentist in a large city-centre practice. I will happily answer questions related to general practice, and have interests in endodontics (root canal), dental implants, CEREC/E4D cad-cam dentistry and cosmetic dentistry.

Experience

I have been a general dental practitioner for over 25 years, working initially under the NHS, but since 2001 have been solely in private practice. I run a busy practice with my wife, Lisa, who is also a dentist. I have also been closely involved in the training of young dentists, and have lectured to dentists on a variety of subjects, both clinical and managerial, related to general dental practice.
