I had scaling and root planing work done on the top right side teeth and developed a headache on the same side of my face and head.  My teeth are also very sensitive and hurt where the work was done.  Is this normal or even possible (i.e. that this type of dental work could be the cause of head pain)?

Paul,

The teeth are part of the same trigeminal nervous system that is responsible for most headaches.  Stimulation anywhere along the trigeminal nervous system can trigger head pain in a susceptible individual.

Teeth sensitivity in the teeth that were scaled is also normal.  The bacterial plaque and calculus that are removed had formed a nice warm blanket over the teeth.  The newly exposed root pores may initially feel a chill until they are resealed by natural processes.

You may want to consider taking an OTC pain reliever.  Consult with your treating dentist if things don't improve within a week or two, or sooner if the pain seems to be getting worse.
