Dentistry/Second Molar Improper Growth (impaction)?

Question
Dr.Dalin,

I have a question about the proper way a second molar should grow in. My second molar has taken quite a long time to grow in. At age 21 it is finally making its way down after having my wisdom teeth removed about a year ago. The problem is that this molar on the left side of the maxillairy (upper) part of my face is growing at an angle moving so that is is facing the tongue. It appears to be off by about 40 degrees (on a diagional)and has more of the outer side exposed that the inner side. Also the front of it appears to be more exposed that then back of it(meaning more has grown out on the 1st molar side than the back side) and the back side still feels hidden in the gum.

I ask you this because I have begun to notice it causing minor pain and is also beginning to shift my upper set of teeth which did not need orthodontic work.

I know I will have to vist the orthodontist/dentist soon, but what do you think you would do if you were treating me?

Answer
i would do exactly what youu are doing...send you to the orthodontist. maybe a retainer can be made to help guide the tooth in properly. maybe bands and wires are needed. but it is an orthodontist's job to get this in correctly. do not wait. do not let it shift other teeth. good luck
