Dentistry/Soreness/pain on tooth

Question
I'm probably avoiding the inevitable but here's the deal.  I've had soreness off
and no, some sensitivity to heat/cold off and on to a tooth.  It's on the same
side as a tooth I recently had work done on and nothing was seen on the x-
ray. The soreness usually comes and goes but today, I can still 'feel' that
tooth after taking Motrin.  So, am I destined for a root canal or can I possibly
save this tooth?

Answer
Dear Rob,

It's hard to say from your description alone. The type of symptoms you report are non-specific, and could arise as a result of any of a number of problems.

However, the increase in the severity of the pain suggests that this is not a problem that is likely to go away on its own. I recommend that you consult with your dentist; if there is any doubt as to whether a root canal treatment is warranted. I suggest that you visit an endodontist (root canal specialist) for more aggressive diagnostic measures to clarify the nature of the problem.

Hope this helps...
